How Many Mental Disorders Are There?
There are more than 300 mental illnesses listed in the DSM-5-TR, according to the American Psychiatric Association. However, there is no single universal count of mental disorders because diagnostic systems organize and define conditions differently. Some broader online lists include more than 450 entries, but these figures are not directly comparable without checking what each list counts.
Two major references are the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), published by the American Psychiatric Association, and the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11), developed by the World Health Organization. Both classify mental disorders into broad categories and individual diagnoses.
